Tennis ace Monica Puig nets gold in Mayagüez

Puerto Rican tennis ace Monica Puig beat Venezuela’s Adriana Pérez Saturday to win the gold medal in women’s singles in the Central American & Caribbean Games.
Puig, 16, is ranked No.3 in the world as a junior. She beat Pérez 6-3, 6-2 at the tennis center on the campus of the University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez, chalking up a 45th gold medal for Puerto Rico on the final day of competition in the two-week CAC Games.
The San Juan native’s career has been on upswing this summer, having made it into the round of 16 in the juniors division at Wimbledon.
